How a hand of live blackjack plays out

Blackjack is you against the dealer, not against the other players at the table. Cards 2 to 9 count their face value, 10s and picture cards count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11, whichever helps. Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over.

That last rule is where the house edge comes from. You act first, so when you bust you lose before the dealer turns a card, and the chart exists to keep that from happening more than it has to.

Online blackjack in Australia: rules to check first

Blackjack’s low edge depends on the table’s rules, and you’ll find them in the game’s help screen. Five of them matter most:

The 6:5 line is the one to take seriously. A natural blackjack turns up in about 4.75% of hands from an eight-deck shoe. Find your hand on the left and the dealer’s up-card along the top. Use the pairs table first when your two cards match, the soft table when you hold an ace counted as 11, and the hard table for everything else. A soft hand can’t bust on the next card, because the ace drops back to 1 if it has to. That’s why the chart doubles soft 17 and soft 18 against weak dealer cards where it would never double a hard 17.

The chart is easy to trust on 20s and hard to trust on the hands that feel wrong. Players most often second-guess these:

• 16 against a dealer 10: hit. Standing costs slightly more over time, even though hitting busts you on most cards.

Insurance and side bets: skip or play

Insurance is offered whenever the dealer shows an ace. It pays 2:1, so it breaks even only if the dealer has blackjack more than one time in three.
