Crown Sydney casino: how Barangaroo's members-only floor works
Crown Sydney casino at Barangaroo is members-only and has no pokies: its licence covers dealer and electronic table games and rules out poker machines. Membership is free, but NSW residents without a VIP gaming history wait 24 hours after applying, and minimum bets start at A$20 for blackjack.

Why Crown Sydney casino has no pokies
Crown Sydney gaming doesn’t run on an ordinary casino licence. The venue holds a Restricted Gaming Licence, overseen by the state’s casino regulator, the NICC, and clause 4(b) settles the pokies question in a line: gaming there “will not include the playing of poker machines”. What the licence does allow is traditional table games plus semi-automated and fully automated tables. The floor has dealers and electronic tables, and nothing with reels.
The same licence closes the door to the public. Clause 6.1 limits entry to VIP members, their guests and Crown’s own guests, “and not open to the general public”. Crown puts it more warmly on its site: members only, “but it is free to join”.

If pokies are what you’re after in Sydney, you need The Star Sydney in Pyrmont or one of the pubs and clubs that share about 87,000 machines across NSW; the pokies near me page covers their hours. For the full list of venues, see casinos in Australia.
What you can play at Barangaroo
Ahead of the 2022 opening, the ABC reported 160 gaming tables and 70 electronic table games. The licence itself sets no cap on the number of tables, only on space: the gaming area can’t be bigger than 20,000 m² or 20% of the resort’s gross floor area, whichever is smaller.
The price of a seat is written into the licence too:
| Game | Minimum bet (licence, as at 30 Nov 2023) |
|---|---|
| Blackjack | A$20 |
| Roulette | A$25 |
| Baccarat | A$30 |
Those minimums apply on the electronic tables as well, and the NICC can set higher ones. Ten hands at the baccarat minimum is A$300 in bets, and ten roulette spins A$250. Online, a single-zero wheel opens from a A$10 deposit, as our online roulette guide shows. For scale, Crown Melbourne is licensed for 440 tables, 100 poker tables and up to 2,628 pokies.
How Crown Sydney membership works
Joining costs nothing, but it takes planning. The steps, in order:
- 1 Bring physical ID Crown needs a physical, valid form of accepted identification. Digital ID can't be accepted, so a licence on your phone won't do.
- 2 Apply at Level 2 or in the app Go to the Crown Rewards desk on Level 2, or apply in the Crown Resorts App. Approval isn't guaranteed.
- 3 Wait out the cooling-off if it applies Under licence clause 6.2, NSW residents who can't show a track record of VIP gaming at other casinos must wait 24 hours before they become members.
- 4 Play on your card Carded play is mandatory. Members play on their membership card and guests on a temporary guest card, at all times.
The 24-hour rule is the one that trips up locals. Decide on a Saturday afternoon to try Crown that night, and if you live in NSW with no VIP history elsewhere, your first hand is on Sunday at the earliest.
No 24-hour wait online
A$10 opens deposit 1 of the SafeCasino welcome package: 100% up to A$1,000 plus up to 300 free spins on pokies.
Crown Sydney opening hours and dress code
Of Australia’s three Crown casinos, Sydney is the only one that isn’t open around the clock. Crown Perth and Crown Melbourne run 24/7; Barangaroo keeps these hours:
| Day | Casino | Crown Rewards desk |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Thursday | 10am to 4am | 10am to 4am |
| Friday and Saturday | 10am to 6am | 10am to 4am |
| Sunday | 10am to 4am | 10am to 4am |
The licence would allow gaming 24 hours a day, but these are the published hours, and the hours page lists no public-holiday closures.
The dress standard is smart casual. Work uniforms, activewear, thongs and unclean clothing are refused, and so are tattoos that are “extensive or excessive” and could be seen as offensive, threatening or divisive. Staff can ask to see photo ID or your Crown Rewards card, and intoxicated guests are turned away.
The casino is at 1 Barangaroo Avenue. We couldn’t confirm Crown Sydney’s parking rates in September 2026, so check them with Crown before you drive.
Cash limits and Crown’s licence record
Sydney’s two casinos share a A$5,000 daily cash limit. A cut to A$1,000 was legislated for 19 Aug 2025 and then deferred to 19 Aug 2027, on condition that both casinos track customer cash use and report it to Liquor & Gaming NSW. The government can bring the lower limit back early. The deferral was reported by trade press in August 2025, so check the current limit with the casino before you bring cash.
Crown’s suitability has also been tested. The Bergin inquiry found Crown Sydney unsuitable in February 2021, and after about three years of remediation the NICC found it suitable to hold its licence on 23 April 2024.
ID checks at the door matter to the regulator too. In August 2026 the NICC fined Crown Sydney A$1.75m after a 16-year-old with a fake driver’s licence got in 19 times in 2025. Bring photo ID on every visit and expect to be asked for it.
Crown Sydney vs live tables online
Crown Casino Sydney is built for a planned night at the tables. For one quick hand of blackjack at 11pm on a Tuesday, membership, the dress code and a A$20 minimum are a lot to get through. Here’s how it lines up against SafeCasino:
| Compared | Crown Sydney | SafeCasino online |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Membership; 24h wait for NSW locals new to VIP play | AUD account; verify with ID and proof of address |
| Pokies | None | Pokies, Megaways, Hold & Win, jackpots |
| Tables | Dealer and electronic tables | Live blackjack, roulette, baccarat, game shows |
| Hours | 10am to 4am (6am on Fri and Sat) | Any time |
| Money in | A$5,000 daily cash limit | Deposits from A$10 by card, e-wallet, Neosurf or crypto |
| Joining perk | Free membership | 100% up to A$1,000 + up to 300 FS, four times |
One rule table players must know before depositing: blackjack, roulette, baccarat and every live table count 0% toward SafeCasino’s x40 welcome wagering. If tables are all you play, deposit without ticking the welcome card; your balance then stays plain cash. Wager the deposit three times before withdrawing, or processing costs may be charged. If you like pokies too, take the bonus, clear it on pokies, then move to the tables. The live casino guide covers the dealer games, and the online baccarat and online blackjack pages explain the rules and odds.
Big players should know the cash-out side too. Withdrawals are capped at 4,000 EUR/USD a day, 16,000 a week and 50,000 a month (the terms allow exceptions at higher VIP levels), and processing can run to 3 days on certain methods. A big table win can’t be sent back to an Australian Visa or Mastercard, so set up an e-wallet or a crypto wallet first; the high roller guide walks through playing at size. SafeCasino is offshore and not licensed in Australia; here’s what the law says about playing there. When you’re set, browse SafeCasino’s live tables or open your SafeCasino account in AUD.
