A live roulette online casino table is a physical wheel in a studio, filmed and streamed, with your bets placed on a software layout and settled by the result the camera shows. No random number generator is involved in the spin. That changes the feel of the game completely and the maths of it not at all, which is the part most pages skip.

The wheel decides the maths, and the zeroes are the wheel

You never touch the wheel. Your side is a betting grid, a timer and a chip selector: the grid locks, the dealer spins, and optical recognition feeds the result to the table software, which settles every bet at once. The dealer is a presenter, not a decision-maker. What live play gives you is a visible result, which is a presentation upgrade with a higher cost per hour attached. Software tables sit on our online roulette page; the wider lobby is on the live casino page.

Count the zero pockets before you count anything else. It is the single most useful thing you can do at a roulette table, live or not.

The same bet, two wheels
WheelPocketsHouse edge on standard bets
European or French, single zero372.70%
American, double zero385.26%
American five-number bet only387.89%

Those figures are arithmetic, not opinion. A single-zero wheel pays 35 to 1 on a number with one chance in 37. A double-zero wheel pays the same 35 to 1 on a number with one chance in 38. The extra pocket is the entire difference, and it roughly doubles what the game costs over time.

The practical rule for an Australian lobby: if a single-zero table is open at a stake you can afford, there is no argument for a double-zero one. French tables add one wrinkle. Where La Partage applies, a losing even-money bet returns half the stake when zero hits, cutting the edge on those bets to 1.35%. Where En Prison applies instead, the bet is held for one more spin. Both are table-specific and both appear in the information panel.

Table limits, and reading them before you sit

Every live table publishes a minimum and a maximum. The minimum catches people out, because it applies per bet position on some tables and to the total stake on others.

  • Minimum per position means every chip has to meet the floor. Spreading across six numbers costs six times the minimum.
  • Minimum total means the floor applies to the whole board, so the same six numbers can be covered for one minimum split six ways.
  • Outside maximums are usually far higher than inside maximums, because red or black pays 1 to 1 and a single number pays 35 to 1. The table caps liability, not stake.
  • The displayed range is per spin, not per session, and it does not interact with any account-level limit you have set.

Low-limit tables fill first in the evening, and a table showing as full is a queue rather than a closure. Switching to a higher-limit table because it has a free seat is the most common way an evening's cost doubles without a decision being made. Check the currency too: an AUD table avoids a conversion at both ends, and our payments page covers which routes keep the account in Australian dollars.

Pace is the cost, not the stake

Here is the number nobody advertises. A dealt live roulette table runs roughly 40 to 50 spins an hour, because the betting window, the spin and the settlement all take real time. A software table can run several hundred.

That makes live roulette slow, and slow is cheap per hour at the same stake. It also makes the minimum stake the thing that decides the cost, because you cannot compensate by playing fewer rounds.

Example only, with round numbers: 45 spins an hour at a A$5 stake puts A$225 of turnover through the table. On a single-zero wheel at 2.70%, the expected cost of that hour is about A$6. On a double-zero wheel it is about A$12. At a A$25 minimum table taken because it had a free seat, it is about A$30 on the better wheel.

Three inputs, one output. The stake and the wheel are chosen once, at the moment of sitting down, and they decide almost everything. The same arithmetic for pokies is on our RTP and volatility page.

Bet types, and what they actually pay

Every standard bet on a single-zero wheel carries the same 2.70% edge, so no inside or outside bet is better value than another. What changes is the shape of the outcome.

Live tables add racetrack bets, which are shortcuts rather than new bets: Voisins du Zéro, Tiers du Cylindre, Orphelins and the neighbour bets each place a set pattern in one tap. They cost several chips at once, which is why they empty a small balance faster than the grid suggests.

Side bets and enhanced payouts on some variants are the exception to the flat-edge rule, because a table paying a multiplier on a straight-up number has usually bought it by reducing something else. No betting pattern changes the edge: doubling after a loss converts many small wins into one large loss, and the table maximum ends the sequence. The vocabulary is in our casino terms glossary.

What the stream needs, and why live roulette online casino bonuses rarely help

Live play is video, so the requirements differ from any other casino game. A stable connection beats a fast one: a dropout during the betting window costs you the spin, while one after the grid locks does not void a bet already sitting on the server. An hour of streamed video is a real amount of mobile data. Lower the video quality if the stream stutters, because the result comes from the server rather than the picture. Play in landscape on a phone, and place bets early in the window rather than in the last second, which is where the grid locks mid-gesture and a chip lands somewhere you did not intend.

The bonus question is the expensive one. Wagering requirements are weighted by game type, and live tables sit at the bottom of that weighting: pokies typically count in full while live games count for a small fraction or are excluded outright. A game counting at ten per cent needs ten times the turnover to move the same distance, and it is played at a slower pace than the pokie it competes with.

A second clause catches live players specifically. A maximum bet while wagering applies to the total stake on a spin, so a spread of chips across the grid can breach it even when no single chip is large, and that is the usual reason a cleared bonus is voided after the fact. If you came for the table, play on cash and take no bonus; if you took one, clear it on whatever carries full weight first. The clauses are on our wagering requirements page.

Variants in an Australian lobby, and five minutes before the first spin

Names differ between studios, the categories do not.

  • Standard live roulette. One dealer, one wheel, single or double zero. The default, and usually cheapest per hour.
  • Auto and speed roulette. No dealer, or a compressed betting window. Same edge, more spins, more cost per hour.
  • Immersive or multi-camera tables. Slow-motion replays and close-ups. The same game with better television.
  • Multiplier, double ball and multi-wheel variants. Payouts are restructured to fund the extra, so the standard table figures do not carry over.
  1. Count the zeroes in the table thumbnail. One is the answer you want.
  2. Open the information panel: minimum, maximum, whether the minimum is per position or total, and whether La Partage applies.
  3. Confirm the table is priced in AUD rather than converted.
  4. Decide the session amount and the stake before the first spin, and work out what that stake costs across an hour at about 45 spins. Then finish verification, before a payout is waiting: our verification page lists the documents and the withdrawal page covers the stages after them.

If a table does not display its wheel type and limits before you sit, pick another one. Other live formats are on the baccarat page and the blackjack page. On the legal side, an online casino service cannot lawfully be offered to people in Australia, and where that line sits is covered on online gambling and Australian law. This is paid entertainment for adults 18 and over, with a margin built into the wheel: set the amount first and treat the hour as the thing you bought.

Live roulette questions Australians ask

Is live roulette fairer than software roulette?

Neither is fairer, because both are built to the same published odds. A live table settles on a physical wheel you can watch, a software table on a certified random number generator you cannot. The visible result is why people prefer live, and the house edge is identical on the same wheel type, so the choice is presentation and pace rather than fairness.

Can I track the wheel to get an edge?

Not in any practical sense online. Studios rotate and maintain wheels precisely, the result is read optically and every spin is independent, so a record of previous numbers carries no information about the next one. The history board is there because players like it, not because it predicts anything.

Why does my bonus barely move when I play live roulette?

Game weighting. Most offers count pokies in full toward the wagering requirement and live tables at a small fraction or not at all, so the same turnover moves the counter a fraction of the distance. Check the weighting table in the offer terms, and also the maximum bet while wagering, because a spread of chips across the grid counts as one total stake.

What happens to my bet if the stream drops mid-spin?

A bet accepted before the grid locked is held on the server and settles on the result regardless of what your screen shows. A bet you were still placing when the connection failed was never submitted. Reopen the table and check the history tab, which is the authoritative record of what was staked and what it returned.
